4V Reading Week B2

The Purpose of This Task
Why are we doing this?
You are going to practice with reading strategies. You will learn about the different reading strategies that exist in order to train you at comprehensive reading.
Comprehensive reading is a useful skill to have and one necessary for your final exam in year 6.
Although you might think: “I’m already good at reading”, or “I have already read a lot of books”, comprehensive reading is a different skill that needs to be trained. Naturally, reading a lot (whether that is books or articles) does make you better at comprehensive reading as well, as it also expands your vocabulary.
In the reading weeks, you will learn about different reading strategies and how to use them, as well as practice with different type of texts. This week, the focus will be on scanning, predicting, activating prior knowledge, deducing word meaning, and reading intensively.

You will practice with B2 level texts and how to approach them.
Duration
You have three lessons to work on this task.
You have 1 week for this task.
Practice Phase: 2 lessons
Show Phase: 1 lesson
Tests
You will take three reading tests this year:
- Start Reading Test – 0.5% of your final grade
- Mid-Year Reading Test – 12% of your final grade (week of 23 February)
- End-of-Year Reading Test – 20% of your final grade (test week 3)
Together, reading accounts for 32.5% of your final grade in year 4.
In year 6, your final exam consists of two parts:
- a school exam grade, and
- a centralised exam grade.
The centralised exam grade is 100% based on reading.
Your school exam grade is made up of:
- Speaking & Conversations – 39%
- Writing – 17%
- Literature – 17%
- Book Experiences (TRQP) – 6%
- Reflection on study options and work (Ikigai) – 6%
- Watching & Listening – 17%
The school exam grade and the centralised exam grade are added together and divided by two. As a result, reading ultimately counts for 50% of your final exam grade.
This is why reading is considered a core skill and receives strong emphasis in all years leading up to the final exam. In year 4, reading already makes up 32.5% of your average grade, and in year 5 its impact on your overall results increases even further.
