Project: Mastering the Job Interview

Welcome to your new pupil-created mining expedition project! You’re going to explore how to apply for a job and go through a job interview process, all by yourself, with just a little guidance to help you along the way. You’ll learn how to choose a job, research it, prepare your application, and then actually do a job interview. Don’t worry if it seems a bit much; we’ll take it step by step, and you’ll do great!

Step 1: Pick a Job

  • Task: Look for a job advert online or in a newspaper that you find interesting. It could be anything from a scientist to a chef!

Step 2: Research Your Chosen Job, 25💎 for notes on this (handwritten)

  • Task 1: Discover what people do in this job every day. You can look online, watch videos, or read articles about it. You can also ask people you know that do this work about it!
  • Task 2: Learn what skills and qualities (traits) the job needs. These are usually listed in the job advert.
  • Task 3: Understand the job advert. What is the company asking for? Make sure you know what they want.
  • Task 4: Find out how to make a resume (a document that shows your skills and experience). There are lots of examples online!

Step 3: Prepare for Your Job Interview, 25💎 for the resume, 25💎 for all other prep

  • Task 1: Create your resume. Include things you’re proud of, like extracurricular activities, after-school jobs, awards, and any clubs you’re part of and take an active role in (like organising events).
    • !!! Make sure your resume reflects what the job advert asks for; remember, you found information about this in step 2.
  • Task 2: Write a short introduction about yourself to share at the beginning of the interview.
  • Task 3: Think of some questions to ask the interviewer about the job or the company. This is important as you will come across interested, assertive and like you have done your research. Get inspiration from your research from step 2.
  • Task 4: Write down what you hope to get from this job. Why do you want it?

Step 4: Do the Job Interview, 25💎 for the script, 50💎 for the video

  • Option 1: Write a script of the job interview. Pretend you’re both the person interviewing and the person being interviewed. What would you ask? What would you answer?
  • Option 2: Act out the job interview with a friend. One of you is the interviewer (the person hiring) and the other is the interviewee (the person applying). Then swap roles!
